Senior UX Designer

RockStep Solutions is a fast-paced startup with a product that is changing the world by revolutionizing drug discovery.  RockStep’s new product, Climb™, is actively used in the market, and the company is focused on product enhancements and rapid scale-up.

General Description

At RockStep, we are passionate about user centered design and believe it is everyone’s responsibility to keep the user experience front and center.  The successful candidate is a mid to senior UX designer.  This position is for an individual contributor.  The successful candidate also has the option to gain mentorship in leadership and management skills to grow and lead a UX team in the future.

Most importantly, the successful candidate will create designs and experiences to ensure RockStep’s user community enjoys a smooth and intuitive experience using Climb.  The successful candidate has a passion for continuous design iteration, collaboration with peers across departments, and continuous improvement for both internal peers and external customers.

This position initially reports to the President of RockStep.  The President leads UX operations and conducts internal and external user research.  The successful candidate will work closely with the President to assimilate research findings into tangible user centered experiences and designs.  The successful candidate will also be mentored in leadership skills.

Outline of Tasks

  • Build, review, refine, and deliver wireframes and prototypes to illustrate design options for internal and customer-driven use cases
  • Create usability scripts and templates, working with UX researcher
  • Provide insights of usability testing to product and development teams to iterate designs and UI implementation
  • Work closely with the President and product managers to plan and visualize strategic roadmap initiatives
  • Working with the product manager, facilitate technical design sessions with the development team
  • Establish UX metrics, working closely with President of RockStep
  • Work with President to build a plan to democratize UX at RockStep
  • Working with UX research, facilitate research and design workshops with customers and internal teams

Experience and Skills

  • Proven track record in UX design for cloud-based applications with complex workflows, life sciences workflows preferred
  • Ability to work across teams, with a close relationship to product manager, developers, customer support, and executives
  • Background working in life sciences, particularly pharmaceutical, experience preferred
  • Experience working in InVision, Figma, or other prototyping tools
  • Ability to communicate and inspire other team members
  • Creative problem solver and continuous learner
  • Experience leading design sprints, ideally in Agile development process
  • Proven experience creating a wireframes and prototypes, portfolio preferred

Soft Skills

  • Customer facing personality: outgoing, easily builds rapport with customers and team
  • Ability to communicate and translate complex processes and ideas to scientists, technicians, and technical product teams


  • At least 3 years’ experience in user centered design
  • BS degree or higher, ideally in Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, or a Biological Sciences degree
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to travel as needed to customer sites


RockStep’s headquarters are in Portland Maine.  This a hybrid position.  Candidates will collaborate with internal team members at least 3 days a week in the office and may work from home two days a week.

Exceptional candidates with extensive UX and drug discovery industry experience may be considered for fully remote positions.
